A free, two-part webinar series exploring the national landscape of programs and policies that support home accessibility for children with disabilities and their families across the country and an overview of  home modifications to improve family well-being

Children with disabilities and complex medical needs often require specialized equipment, supplies and home modifications to live safely and comfortably at home. However, many families face challenges identifying and navigating services, paying for home modifications, and accessing the supports they need.

Join the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children’s Health and the Berman Institute of Bioethics’ iDeas Lab for session one of “Essential Yet Out of Reach: Home Accessibility for Children with Disabilities” on May 21 from 12 to 1 p.m.

This session will introduce foundation-funded research on the national landscape of programs and policies that support home accessibility for children with disabilities and their families. It will also provide an overview of home modifications, including:

  • What they are
  • Why they matter
  • How they can help improve safety, independence and family well-being

Moderator Carolyn C. Foster, MD, MS, will lead an engaging discussion with experts:

  • Rebecca Seltzer, MD, MHS – Pediatrician, bioethicist, health services researcher; Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine
  • Crystal Thomas – Parent navigator, educator, advocate, advisory board member; Program Lead, Patient and Family Advocate, Children’s National Hospital
  • Tamara Morgan – Associate Director, Adaptive Design Association, Inc.

Dr. Foster is is an attending physician at Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. She is also chairs the Division of Specialized Care for Children’s Medical Advisory Board.

The discussion will cover:

  • Common barriers to accessing home modifications
  • Real-world impacts of these supports on children and caregivers
  • Opportunities for action and advocacy

Time will also be available for questions and answers with attendees.

The webinar series is free and open to families, caregivers and community members interested in learning more.
