Practice practical calming strategies and de-escalation techniques to help children move from challenging behavior to ready to learn at this free workshop for family members, social workers and educators

Illinois STAR NET Region II and  VI will host “Change the State to Educate: Self-Regulation and Calming Strategies for Young Children” on June 11 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Village of Orland Park Civics Center Recreation Department. Sign in between 8:30 and 9 a.m.

Grounded in Dr. Angela Searcy’s Push Past It! framework, this session will focus on “change the state to educate” by identifying Amy G. (the amygdala) in action. It uses the lens of “Change You, Change the Child, Change the Consequences” to analyze adult responses that escalate or de-escalate challenging behavior.

Participants will learn practical co-regulation and calming strategies to:

  • Recognize how stress responses affect behavior and learning
  • Reduce escalation
  • Strengthen adult responses
  • Create brain-ready classrooms and learning environments for young children

There will be a short, 30-minute lunch break. Please plan to bring your lunch.

Special and general educators, family members, paraprofessionals, social workers and others working with or caring for children with challenging behavior are welcome to attend this free, hands-on session.
