A free webinar for caregivers, families and medical professionals discussing the many stages of adjusting to a child’s genetic diagnosis, coping strategies and how professionals can support families

The Courageous Parent Network will host “In the Room: Navigating the Space Between Adjustment and Acceptance in the Context of a Genetic Diagnosis” on Jan. 21 from 7 to 8 p.m.

Receiving a genetic diagnosis (or lacking a diagnosis) for a child can be a profoundly life-altering experience for families.

Take a deeper dive into this experience with licensed genetic counselor Mary-Frances Garber, MS, CGC.

Mary-Frances will draw on her extensive experience working with parents and caregivers to explore the complex emotional responses that emerge as families learn to live with a diagnosis or uncertainty and build their “new normal.”

Join Mary-Frances and this panel of parents, Dr. Tasha Faruqui, Joanne Huff, and Naomi Williams, as they explore the realities of accepting versus adjusting to their child’s medical complexity while navigating its challenges.

The discussion will include:

  • The difference between emotional adjustment and acceptance in the context of a child’s genetic diagnosis.
  • The emotional responses and coping strategies parents may experience over time.
  • How a genetic diagnosis can be understood as one aspect of a child’s identity, rather than a defining characteristic.
  • Ways clinicians and medical professionals can support families in light of a genetic diagnosis.

The webinar is free.  The session will focus on caregivers and family members. Healthcare providers and social workers are also welcome to attend.
