Children with phenylketonuria (PKU) and their families can spend time together and enjoy winter sports for free at Camp Sunshine in Maine

Camp Sunshine provides children with life-threatening illnesses and their families a unique, supportive program at Maine’s Sebago Lake.

Medical support is available throughout each session to assist with the medical needs of patients attending camp. Urgent Care and other medical facilities are also located nearby. Bereavement sessions are available for families who have experienced the death of a child from a supported illness.

Camp Sunshine is free and open to families with children ages 21 and under with diagnoses that include kidney disease, sickle cell disease, hematologic conditions, phenylketonuria (PKU) and more. Campers come from the United States, Canada and beyond for illness-specific sessions of varying lengths to enjoy:

  • Making memories and building family relationships
  • Meeting others facing similar challenges
  • Trying new activities
  • Relaxing in a safe, welcoming environment

Camp Sunshine will host the “PKU and Allied Disorders” camp session from Dec. 4 to 7.

Children with PKU and their families will experience winter activities, including:

  • Ice skating
  • Snowshoeing
  • Sledding
  • Horse-drawn carriage rides
  • Skiing at nearby Pleasant Mountain

Travel reimbursements and volunteer opportunities are also available.
