Free, in-person workshop exploring the impact of trauma on playing and learning in children with disabilities

Join STAR NET Region II and the  La Grange Area Department of Special Education (LADSE) for “The Intersection of Trauma, Play and Learning” on Jan. 29 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Check-in will be from 8:30 to 9 a.m.

STAR NET Region II serves north and west suburban Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, and McHenry counties.

Adverse childhood experiences and traumatic events are associated with neurological changes that impact behavior, development and learning. Children with disabilities are at a higher risk of experiencing trauma than their non-disabled peers. Play can indicate trauma and can also help with providing trauma-informed care.

Occupational therapist and child development specialist Jennifer Rosinia will help workshop participants explore the stress response system and its impact on play and learning.

Dr. Rosinia will discuss topics including:

  • Defining trauma (including medical trauma, which some children with disabilities have experienced)
  • Listing impacts of trauma on development and learning
  • Identifying the impact of trauma as seen through the ways a child plays
  • Practicing social-emotional intervention strategies while playing
  • Promoting hope and healing

The workshop is open to family members, educators, social workers, therapists and other family service providers.

Visit the STAR NET Region II website to register for “The Intersection of Trauma, Play and Learning” workshop.
