Free Virtual and In-Person Family Sign Language Classes

Free virtual and in-person sign language classes in English and Spanish running from August through September

The CHS (Chicago Hearing Society) is offering free Family Sign Language classes. In-person and virtual classes will run from August through September in both English and Spanish.

Please refer to the Family Sign Language class schedule for meeting dates and class details.

Class instructors are deaf and communicate using American Sign Language (ASL) and written English (or Spanish). The classes will not use any sound or audio.

These classes are free to family members of children from birth through high school who are deaf, deafblind or hard of hearing. Extended family members are also welcome.

You do not have to be an Illinois resident to participate.

All classes take place from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

There are two VIRTUAL class level options in English:

• Family Beginners (English/virtual) is on Mondays, Aug. 5 to Sept. 16, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. This class is for anyone new to sign language or who needs more practice with vocabulary and putting together simple sentences.
  Register for the virtual Family Beginners class.
• Family Beyond Beginners is on Thursdays, Aug. 8 to Sept. 12, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. This level is for individuals who know some sign language and would like to practice phrases and sentences.
  Register for the Family Beyond Beginners class.

The in-person Family Beginners class will meet at CHS. Its office is at 2017 N. Mendell, Suite 3NE, in Chicago:

• Family Beginners (English/in-person) is on Wednesdays, Aug. 7 to Sept. 11, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
  Register for the in-person Family Beginners class.

A virtual beginner’s class is also available for Spanish speakers/ Clase de español familiar.

• The virtual Spanish Family Sign Language Class is on Tuesdays, Aug. 6 to Sept. 10, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
  Register for the virtual sign language class in Spanish.

¡CLASES de LENGUAJE de SENAS AMERICANO (ASL) en ESPANOL!

Estas clases son GRATUITAS para los familiares de niños sordos y con problemas de audición desde el nacimiento hasta la escuela secundaria. Los miembros de la familia extendida son bienvenidos. Usted no necesita residir en Illinois para participar.

Los instructores son sordos y se comunican usando ASL e inglés escrito. ¡NO SE UTILIZARÁ AUDIO!

CALENDARIO DE CLASES:

• Martes, 6, 13, 20, 27 de Agosto.
