A free monthly self-advocacy series empowering youth and young adults ages 14 to 22 to build confidence, make informed choices, communicate their needs and plan for life after high school

Join Family Matters Parent Training and Information Center for its virtual series “Charting My Course: My Life, My Voice, Building an interdependent Life” from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. every fourth Tuesday on Zoom from November 2026 through June 2027.

This monthly self-advocacy series is for transition-age youth and young adults with disabilities. The series will help participants build the skills and confidence to have a stronger voice in decisions about their lives while recognizing that adulthood does not mean having to do everything alone.

The Nov. 24 meeting will focus on “Charting My Course: My Team: What is Interdependence?”

Participants will enjoy meeting with peers and exploring:

  • Interdependence and communicating their wants and needs
  • Learning how to make choices
  • Identifying strengths
  • Solving problems
  • Accessing community resources
  • Building a network of people and supports that can help them reach their goals

Each session will highlight a Charting the LifeCourse (CtLC) tool or concept and include:

  • Interactive activities
  • Real-life scenarios
  • Opportunities to practice self-advocacy

The series will also feature adult self-advocates and community partners as guest speakers.

The group is free and open to all Illinois transition-age youth and young adults with disabilities. All meetings will take place on Zoom.

See the “Charting My Course: My Life, My Voice, Building an Interdependent Life” event page for more details.
