A free training series designed to help parents, guardians and interested community members understand and navigate the special education process in Illinois

The Family Resource Center on Disabilities is hosting their “Parent Advocacy Leadership (PAL) Training Program” via Zoom beginning Sept. 10 and running through Oct. 29. Sessions will be each Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (excluding holidays).

Are you a parent of a child with a disability or a community member interested in gaining a strong understanding of the special education system?

The PAL training series is designed to provide an understanding of state and federal laws, an update on current topics and skills for navigating the special education process in Illinois. PAL participants must be willing to:

  • Attend all eight sessions
  • Complete homework prior to each session
  • Complete a pre- and post-survey

Training will cover:

  • The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
  • State law (Part 226)
  • The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
  • Section 504
  • Advocacy

Participants who complete all eight sessions will receive a Parent Advocacy Leadership Certificate of Completion.
