Free webinar for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to help ensure they receive appropriate and equitable health care during COVID-19.

COVID-19 poses a significant risk for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) living in residential facilities and group homes, or even those able to live independently,

Preparing individuals with IDD for medical treatment, understanding the law, asking for reasonable accommodation and planning for illness at home are some ways to ensure appropriate and equitable health care. The “COVID-19: Know Your Rights & Prepare” webinar will discuss these ways. The event is scheduled for 1 p.m. April 21.

This presentation will cover:

  1. Getting Equitable Health Care is the Law – Federal Law (ADA, Section 504 of Rehab Act) and OCR Bulletin 3-28-20
  2. Reasonable Accommodations: What You Need to Know
  3. Who to Ask and When
  4. Reasonable Accommodations to Ask For

  6. Don’t Neglect Mental Well-Being

PRESENTER:

Melissa L. Desroches, RN, PhD is a registered nurse and post-doctoral research fellow at Tufts University. The mission of her program of research is to improve the health, wellness, and quality of life of adults with developmental disabilities by improving developmental disability nursing care. Her current research project examines nurses’ attitudes and emotions toward caring for adults with intellectual disabilities in the US. Dr. Desroches earned her PhD in nursing at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and a Certificate in Disability and Health Policy from Suffolk University in Boston in conjunction with the Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND) program at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Center at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester.
