Overnight camp for children and young adults with spina bifida.

Camp Independence is run by the YMCA of Metro Chicago in association with the Illinois Spina Bifida Association. Camp Independence is specifically designed for children and young adults with spina bifida. The 2018 camp sessions start June 10.

Campers have fun while climbing the tower, singing around the campfire, paddling a boat, and making new friends. Campers develop special relationships with each other and their counselors. For many campers, this may be their first chance to spend a night away from home. All campers are encouraged to become active participants in their own care as well as their continued development of independence. Campers are shown that even though they have a disability; they can be anything they want to be and are provided with an environment where they can be successful.

Camp Independence offers many different activities that promote confidence, cooperation and are fun. Sessions are divided by age group, allowing the staff to provide age-appropriate programming.

Some activities might include swimming, arts and crafts, hockey, boating, campfire, high ropes,  basketball, bocce ball, climbing tower, drama, singing and team building.
