Family Matters Parent Training and Information Center and Easterseals Family Support Services serving Chicago and the Greater Rockford Area will host “Navigating Puberty and Developmental Disabilities” on July 14 from 5 to 6 p.m.
Are you a parent, caregiver, educator or professional helping someone with intellectual disabilities navigate puberty and its unique challenges?
Join this interactive session for practical tools and strategies to support youth as they experience puberty’s physical, emotional and social changes. Participants will explore:
- Typical developmental milestones during puberty
- How intellectual disabilities may affect a youth’s understanding and response to these changes
- Tools for teaching body autonomy, personal hygiene and healthy boundaries
- Strategies for encouraging self-awareness, safety and self-advocacy
- Real-life examples
- Inclusive communication strategies for discussing sensitive topics such as relationships and emotional regulation in a respectful, age-appropriate way
