Join Family Matters Parent Training & Information Center (FMPTIC) and the Illinois Guardianship and Advocacy Commission (IGAC) on Zoom for “Understanding Procedural Safeguards” on Nov. 20 from 9 to 10 a.m.
IGAC Special Education Rights Manager Laura Hart will provide an overview of procedural safeguards within the special education process. The session aims to empower parents and caregivers of students with disabilities.
Laura will break down the rights and protections guaranteed under the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), including:
- The right to informed consent
- Access to educational records
- Prior written notice
- Processes for dispute resolution
She will provide practical examples and clear explanations to help attendees:
- Gain a deeper understanding of how procedural safeguards protect their children’s educational rights
- Learn how to use these tools to advocate effectively
