Two-week virtual program for youth ages 16-22 provides an introduction to the world of work.

In response to COVID-19, the Helen Keller National Center for Deaf-Blind Youths and Adults (HKNC) continues to address the access that young adults with combined vision and hearing loss have to services provided under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA).

The center’s M~POWER Program offers Pre- Employment Transition Services, established through WIOA, and introduces transition-age youth to aspects of competitive and integrated employment during social distancing.

This two-week program is scheduled from July 27 to Aug. 7.

Participants will virtually join peers ages 16 to 22 from around the country.

The Virtual M~POWER Program offers participants an introduction to the world of work and emphasizes the five areas of Pre-Employment Transition Services:

  • Job exploration counseling
  • Work-based learning experiences
  • Counseling on post-secondary educational opportunities
  • Workplace readiness training
  • Self-advocacy

Virtual M~POWER aims to provide the following outcomes:

  • Explore and learn skills in the core areas of Orientation and Mobility, Communication, Independent Living and Adaptive Technology- essential for successful employment
  • Learn from competitively employed deaf-blind mentors and peer experiences
  • Make informed plans for career or job goals after high school
  • Learn how to apply for a dog guide and the skills needed to maintain the working team
  • Develop self-advocacy and exercise these skills to co-facilitate a peer learning group
  • Learn how to apply to college, identify personalized accommodations, and self-advocate
  • Explore universal precautions for work safety during COVID-19

The program cost is $625 per week.

Prior to the beginning of the program, HKNC staff will assess technology available to the participant to determine the best instruction modality that would ensure full access to information and instruction.  Instruction may be provided by telephone, iPhone, iPad, e-mail, computer, videophone, FaceTime, Zoom meetings and/or Google Classroom.
