2022 Homeowner Assistance Fund

Illinois homeowners who have fallen behind on payments due to the pandemic can apply for the Illinois Emergency Homeowner Assistance Fund (ILHAF), which is administered by the Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA).

Starting April 11, 2022, IHDA will offer the Illinois Homeowner Assistance Fund (ILHAF). The program will offer up to $30,000 per household in assistance to approved applicants to eliminate or reduce past-due mortgage and property tax payments. The application portal will remain open until 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, May 31, 2022.

ILHAF provides direct financial assistance to prevent mortgage delinquencies, defaults, displacements and foreclosures for income-eligible homeowners experiencing pandemic-related hardships.

Webinars are currently being held in English and Spanish to help applicants get informed, explore options and start the application process.

For those without access to a computer or the internet, or have any additional questions, please contact the ILHAF hotline at 1-866-IL-HELP/(866) 454-3571.

Reminder – Prior to being eligible to apply, potential applicants must demonstrate they have either communicated with their mortgage provider about their inability to pay or sought counseling with a HUD-approved counseling organization. The U.S. Department of the Treasury views this assistance to be used as a “last resort,” so any application without proof of counseling will be declined. A list of eligible housing counseling agencies can be found here.
